You don’t have to be a bookworm to fall in love with Powell’s City of Books in Portland, Oregon. As the largest new and used bookstore in the world, this iconic landmark has been claiming the hearts of Oregonians and visitors alike for more than 40 years. With four floors, nine color-coded rooms, and approximately one million books, Powell’s never fails to delight.
Located in downtown Portland, Powell's City of Books dates back to 1971, when it began in a former used car dealership.
Today, it sprawls over an entire city block, taking up four floors and housing more than one million books.
Book lover or not, a trip to Powell's is a magical experience that belongs on the top of any Portland newcomer's to-do list.
Upon entering the store, pick up one of the color-coded maps. It's easy to get lost in here!
The bookshelves are overflowing with new and used titles, recommendations, board games, amazing Portland-themed souvenirs and more!
You and your kids will love stopping by the Rose Room for story time, which takes place every Saturday at 11 a.m.
Serious book lovers won't want to miss visiting the Rare Book Room. This 1,000 square foot room features several thousand of the most treasured books in the store, along with antique furniture and carefully curated artwork. The room is open daily between 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
If you need to take a break from the books, rest for a while at World Cup Coffee & Tea, located next to the Gold Room.
No matter how many hours you spend exploring this city of books, it's sure to be an experience unlike any other in the Beaver State.
