Life in Oklahoma during the 1930s was quite different than it is today. And those who lived during the Great Depression era experienced some of the worst living conditions in the state’s history. Thanks to Yale University and The Library of Congress, we have this rare collection of photos that portray the condition of the homes that many Oklahomans lived in during this time period. Here are 16 of those images that have been preserved that will open your eyes to a different time:
1. This tenant farmer and family are living in this worn down house in Warner, Oklahoma, and using the porch for additional sleeping space.
6. This shack home belonged to a woman and her four children who were surviving on what she could make in the fields nearby. The father had deserted the family. Located in Vian.
8. A WPA (Works Progress/Work Projects Administration) worker and his wife sitting in front of their shack home on the Arkansas River near Webbers Falls.
