Guthrie, Oklahoma’s territorial capital and first state capital, is a town surrounded by history and plenty of mystery. This Wild West town got its start in 1887 and was immediately filled with activity – some good, some bad and some underground – or so the story goes…
Many people attest to the fact that a whole system of tunnels runs below the town of Guthrie. But yet many still deny their existence. Is it to cover up a whole underground society that used these tunnels during the Prohibition to hide many illegal activities running rampant in town?
The legend goes like this: During the days of Prohibition, an elaborate tunnel system was used to transport barrels of whiskey all around town. The most talked about tunnel is the one that ran (or runs?) from the capitol building on W. Harrison Avenue to the Blue Belle Saloon down the street that housed a bordello on the top floor.

In 1967, a construction worker was on a team that was demolishing a building in town. He said he uncovered a gambling room underground filled with tables, cards and roulette wheels. Legend is filled with stories of Guthrie's ring of illegal gambling, so were the tunnels used to hide the nefarious behavior in this esteemed capital city? The mystery still remains...or does it?
