Northern Californians love to brag about one thing: we can swim in the Pacific Ocean and ski the slopes all in the same day – if we wanted to, of course. Since we’re so amazing at doing all sorts of things in one day, you’ll love this list of unique day trips you can take when you’re tired from that round trip ocean to mountain excursion.
1. Fremont: Coyote Hills
Coyote Hills Regional Park has been around for a long time. A favorite place to hike, bike or take a deep breath after a long week.
2. Emerald Bay: Kayaking
Emerald Bay in South Lake Tahoe is as blue as a topaz and surrounded by majestic mountain peaks. The perfect place to kayak, camp or hike.
3. Camino: Berry Picking
Located in the mountaintop town of Camino are dozens of fams known fondly as Apple Hill. This may be one of the best places to pick apples, blackberries or your annual Christmas tree. Once you come here it will become an annual thing.
4. Lodi: Bird Watching
If you're one who loves bird watching then this city located in the Sacramento Valley has the spots for you. It's a favorite spot of the Sandhill Crane, too.
5. Santa Cruz: Hiking
The Mystery Spot is a local favorite. Part nature hike, part walking tour and fun house to get dizzy in.
6. Byron: Skydiving
For some of you this looks like fun. A day trip for the memory books, for sure.
7. San Carlos: Scuba Diving
Scuba diving is an option, too. Feel like swimming with the fishes? Here's your chance.
8. American River: White Water Rafting
You don't need to be a pro to gather your friends and hop in a raft. There are dozens of companies along the river where you can rent one for the day--unless you want to go with a professional. Either way, you'll love it!
9. Folsom: Cycling
Pull that bicycle out of the garage and take a ride. The gorgeous creeks, rivers and lakes make this day a lovely one.
10. Milpitas: Hang Gliding
Hang gliding is a thing here. Soar over the valley below and listen to the quiet. We hear there's nothing like it.
11. Alameda: Sailing
Sailing is just a day trip away. When was the last time you enjoyed a few hours on the San Francisco Bay with friends?
12. Fairplay: Wine Tasting
Napa isn't the only place to enjoy a nice glass of wine.
13. Half Moon Bay: Horseback Riding
When was the last time you did this?
14. Tracy: Hot Air Balloon
Up, up and away! Take your honey on a hot air balloon ride. It doesn't get any more romantic than this.
15. Rocklin: Local Playground
A day trip doesn't have to be a huge production. Pack a picnic lunch and load the kids in the car. It doesn't get easier than this.
If you’re one of “those” Northern Californians who love to share all you can do in a day, how about actually doing a few of those very things? This list just scratches the surface of unique day trips. We pretty much have it all in this part of the state. Wouldn’t you agree?
