If you're looking for a lovely, small beach that's secluded by beautiful forestry, you'll find it at College Cove in Trinidad State Beach. Located in the northern portion of the beach, the cove requires a small hike to get to...but you'll find that the hike itself is part of the adventure!
You'll access the trail by ignoring the first signed entrance for Trinidad State Beach and continuing down the road until you find the parking lot for College Cove and Elk Head. To reach the beach, you'll set off on a small, narrow trail located directly off of the Elk Head trail.
Immediately you'll feel as if you've entered another world. Greenery surrounds you from every side and whimsical moss-covered trees are twisted into odd formations. The two-mile loop trail is very easygoing, making for a wonderful excursion into this beautiful region of the North Coast.
The trail will continue along the cliffs above the beach, but you'll find a staircase that will take you down to the cove. Use caution when descending to the beach since the stairs are quite steep and aren't very well maintained.
Once you get down to the beach, you'll be in total bliss. The secluded, off-the-beaten-path aspect of the beach means that you'll likely have the place to yourself (especially if you go on a weekday). Like many other North Coast beaches, the water is cold but you'll find it refreshing on a hot summer day.
Be sure to go at low tide when the cove boasts dozens of lovely tide pools! Surrounded by stunning scenery, rugged cliffs, and sandy white beaches, this is definitely one of the most photogenic beaches in Northern California.
