Every state has their claim to fame – and that’s what makes all 50 SO unique. But being born and raised in North Carolina, I can say there are quite a few things we’re just better at than our other ‘neighbors’ (near and far). Starting with these 10.
Eastern or Lexington - it doesn't matter what style you prefer, NC BBQ is the BEST in the nation. The best part - we have plenty of amazing joints to choose from, and some of us even have our own secret BBQ sauce recipes.
2. Preserving history
North Carolina has more historical towns, and landmarks, than one can count. For a start - check out my guide to the oldest towns in North Carolina
3. Always finding a way to cool off in the summer.
Sure, we have pools AND beautiful beaches - but ask any native North Carolinian and they'll tell you at least five
that are their absolute favorite for a summer dip. Why not take advantage of cool mountain water and even some waterfall views?
4. Giving directions
You can't trust a GPS - the directions I do trust though? 'You'll see a Bojangles on your left, then you'll take a right at the next light, drive two miles till you see a blue house then take another left.' Yes, please, thank you.
5. And just being really nice, awesome people in general.
It's more than southern hospitality - it's our culture. You'll always find someone looking for a good conversation or to lend a helping hand here. I swear, people are just nicer here.
6. Life changing inventions
Krispy Kreme, Texas Pete, Cheerwine...ok, those are all food related, but North Carolina has paved the way for amazing technological and medical innovations. If you're curious to know more...you can find a full list
7. Enjoying the view
Whether we're taking the scenic route on the Blue Ridge or enjoying the beginning of a new day on the beach, North Carolinians know how to relax and be fully in the moment. Can you blame us when our views are THIS pretty?
8. Always finding adventure
On any given weekend, North Carolinians will either be A. relaxing or B. in full adventure mode. This can include surfing at Cape Hatteras, hang gliding at Jockey's Ridge, rock climbing on Pilot Mountain, or even just challenging ourselves with new hiking trails.
Between homestyle southern cooking you might find at Grandmas, or dining at a five-star restaurant, North Carolina is a foodie haven!
10. State pride
Sure, we might have bad days, we might have bad weeks, we might bash politics, we might wish for change. While these are all external factors, one thing is inherently true: North Carolinians are some of the proudest people I've ever encountered. It's hard to feel any other way when you're raised in such an amazing and beautiful state.
I feel there’s SO much more I could add to this list, but after this point, it would just be bragging.
