Situated amongst the gorgeous, rolling foothills of North Carolina is a small town that just begs to be explored. From unique cuisine, a state of the art equestrian center, digging for gold, a gorgeous golf course and country club…and not to mention incredible views…you’ll want to add this ‘minted original’ to your weekend plans.
Rutherfordton could quite possibly be one of the best kept secrets in North Carolina. This small town has a quaint main street, gorgeous Antebellum houses, an amazing children's museum and plenty of adventure inside the town and not far away.
To get some energy for a full day ahead, stop by Small Town Coffee Roasters. Located in a quaint, renovated historic building this small space packs big flavor (and caffeine).
Each week, the coffee is roasted in small batches in a Royal #1 vintage coffee roaster. If you prefer your brew iced (like myself) grab a cup of their cold brew coffee. Unlike regular iced coffee, cold brew is steeped in water for a significant amount of time. It diminishes the amount of acidity (adding a sweeter taste) and increases the caffeine.

Now that you're fully caffeinated, you have a few options for some early morning exploration. The first is The Bechtler House.

17 years before the U.S mint, in 1832, Christopher Bechtler minted the country's first one dollar gold coin. The Bechtlers minted over $2.24 million in gold coins during the mid-1800s. Christopher Bechtler's historic home, built in 1838, operates today as a living history museum. Take comprehensive tours and learn about the life of the Bechtlers as well as the minting process. Bonus, there's also a Bechtler rifle.
If you're more concerned with tee time than minted coins - play a round of golf at the gorgeous Cleghorn Golf and Country Club. With beautiful Blue Ridge views, pristine courses, and even a plantation house - it's one of the most gorgeous and unique golf courses in North Carolina.

On the property you'll see the Cleghorn Plantation House. Oral history claims it was designed by David Patton, the supervising architect for the State Capitol in Raleigh.

While inside tours are usually off limits (or ask and you shall receive), one of the most breathtaking aspects is the hand-painted mural by famous American painter John Pike.

The plantation and golf course were recently purchased. In a year or two, this gorgeous house will be converted to a farm-to-table restaurant.
Take a little break and grab lunch at the amazing Mimi's Dairy-O Pizza and Grill. Whatever your comfort food of choice - they have it. From delicious, hand-tossed pizza, juicy burgers, and hot dogs loaded with plenty of toppings...there's something for everyone. Just make sure you save room for ice cream, they have some of the best soft-serve you'll find in the Blue Ridge!

I think we can agree on one thing - everyone likes a good swig of whisky. Not far from Rutherfordton, in Bostic, you'll find where the award-winning Defiant Whisky was born and made.

You can take comprehensive tours and get behind the scenes on some of the best whisky found in the U.S. The best part...there will definitely be samples to taste and bottles to purchase!
While in Bostic, you MUST visit Washburn's General Store. Started in 1831, this five-generation business is recognized as the oldest, family owned and operated business in North Carolina.

This quirky little store has quite possible anything anyone could ever need - from an old fashioned washboard to pickled vegetables, and overalls of all sizes. Ed Washburn will more than likely be sitting there, reading a newspaper, maybe even with a few friends drinking coffee. He will be happy to tell you the history of the store and history of the family. It could quite possibly be one of the most unique general stores you'll find in North Carolina.
To end a perfect day in Rutherfordton, stop by the Tryon Equestrian Center for Saturday Night Lights. Hosted from spring-fall, Saturday Night Lights offers free parking, admission, carousel rides, face painting and live music. There's several dining options located on-site as well as lodging options.

You'll get to witness some of the best equestrians in the U.S in competitive jumping. This state-of-the-art equestrian center has opened its doors to not just those who love the sport, but everyone. The events are usually jam-packed and filled with (free) fun for the whole family. Even if you're visiting another time, the center is open 365 days a year.

For the cherry on top, you can't beat a perfect day ending with this PERFECT view. Rutherfordton is indeed packed to the brim with unique charm and activities fit for every kind of person. If you're planning to make a weekend of it, nearby attractions include the gorgeous Lake Lure and adventurous Chimney Rock.
Talk about the best day ever, I can’t wait to plan a return trip to Rutherfordton and experience this charming small town all over again! Have you visited here before or live here now?
If you’re looking for another unique day trip in North Carolina, pay a visit to the highest elevation lake east of the Rockies, Lake Glenville.
