15. Take a drive down the pottery trail
With the handmade pottery capital right here in OUR STATE, Seagrove is a day trip unlike any other. This unique artists colony is nested just fifteen minutes past Asheboro. Potters began to inhabit Seagrove in the late 18th century, eventually word spread to New York City and before long Seagrove, and its artistry, was nationally known. You'll feel a bit back in time, almost otherwordly as you drive down the long country roads.
14. Get 'wild' at The North Carolina Zoo
Located in Asheboro in the Uwharrie Mountains, this natural habitat 500-acre zoo is home to 1600 diverse animals. The best part is how "home" the animals appear. You can watch Giraffes roam free in large open fields. Or step into a mini-jungle to watch monkeys dangle from trees as exotic birds zip past.

The rotunda of the capitol building is beautiful. Mirroring classic architecture, the centerpiece is a 1970's copy of Antonio Canova's original statue of George Washington. Explore the Capitol building then take the day to explore the capitol city.

Pilot Mountain is a very distinct landmark to this state. It is one of the last remaining remnants of the ancient chain of Suaratown Mountains. Today, it is great for hiking. Follow The Ledge Spring Trail's lower loop to a popular site for rock climbing, if you're feeling adventurous.

The Reynolda House Museum of American Art is rooted with history, this gorgeous house was once built and inhabited by R. J Reynolds and his family. In 1965, the estate opened to the public as a museum dedicated to displaying a premier collection of art from the colonial period to the present. Bonus: Reynolda gardens!
