New Mexicans aren’t big on bragging, but we do have plenty of reasons to be proud of our state. From the silly to the serious, here are 10 things at which New Mexico is the absolute best.
1. The deepest cave in the nation is in New Mexico.
Lechuguilla Cave, which is part of Carlsbad Caverns, goes down 1,604 feet.
2. Pecan production.
Did you know that 27% of all the pecans produced in the U.S. are from New Mexico?
3. Chile pepper production.
It's hardly a surprise that 37% of chiles grown in the U.S. come from the Land of Enchantment.
4. Best regional chain.
So this one's a little subjective but, come on, Blake's is unbeatable.
5. Best at dealing with alien jokes.
You don't have to live in Roswell to hear the comments about little green men. We're skilled at pretending these jokes are original.
6. Commercial space travel.
New Mexico is the only state in the nation with a purpose-built commercial spaceport.
7. Hot air ballooning.
The first ballooning world championships were held in Albuquerque in 1973. The annual Balloon Fiesta holds the Guinness World Record for the most balloons launched in one hour - 345 of them!
8. Laser weaponry.
In 1973, while everyone else was busy singing along to Marvin Gaye songs, people in New Mexico were using early laser technology to shoot drones out of the sky. The first test on an aerial mock-target took place over the Kirtland Airforce Base (pictured).
9. Breakfast burritos.
New Mexico brought you the breakfast burrito. They may not be as fancy as lasers, but they do give you a reason to smile every day.
10. Fire prevention awareness.
New Mexico introduced Smokey Bear to the nation. Remember: only you can prevent wildfires.
