In New Mexico, making green chile is an art – and quite a few of our restaurants have come up with outstanding versions of this state delicacy. Among these places are flashy, four-star establishments and much loved local favorites. However, we would like to call your attention to this tiny, unassuming place whose time-tested green chile recipe is beyond spectacular.
Tucked away in the out-of-the-way town of El Rito, El Farolito is a New Mexico gem. Tucked away doesn't mean unnoticed, though! This family-run place has attracted the attention of publications (and hungry folks) from around the nation.
In the land of chile, El Farolito shines, especially with their green. They have taken home more than a few State Fair blue ribbons for it. We know ribbons are nice, but they back up their chile with the perfect balance of heat and chile flavor.
Topped with their robust green chile, El Farolito's green chile cheeseburgers are consistently listed among the best in the state.
Along with the chile, this is THE place for real-deal New Mexican food like tacos, burritos and enchiladas. It's all fabulous, but standouts are the Frito pies and the chile rellenos.
If you can't decide, try the Farolito Special, a combination with an enchilada, relleno, and a taco. It's served with rice and beans and a couple of their fresh and fabulous sopaipillas. Spring for some of their creamy guacamole too!
Don't forget dessert! El Farolito has cookies, ice cream cones and sundaes, but hold out for the pie choices for the day, like the Mexican chocolate cream pie or cherry cream.
Find this tiny joint on Main Street in El Rito (New Mexico 554). Seating is limited and leave your credit and debit cards at home. They don't take plastic.
