In 2012, we were obsessed with “Gangnam Style,” YOLO became the motto of the year, and a store called Rebel Donut opened in Albuquerque. Five years later, I still care about the donuts.
Rebel Donut isn’t just a place to grab a cup of coffee and a dozen glazed. Here, donuts are an art form, both in terms of appearance and taste.
In fact, the treats are so good that they’ve been featured on both Food Network and the Cooking Channel.
Rebel Donut has also been a Best of Burque winner and Best of the City Winner for several years.
At least 30 flavors of donuts are handmade each day. These include some gluten free and vegan options.
Popular flavors include the French toast donut, which is light as a cloud and just sweet enough to satisfy. The Fruity Pebble combines donuts with your favorite childhood breakfast cereal.
The most infamous goodie is inspired by “Breaking Bad.” The “blue sky” is studded with blue rock candy.
For something really unique, order the top shelf single. The glaze contains liquor and changes daily.
There is no limit to the creative combinations. Red chile chocolate bacon anyone?
Rebel Donut has two locations. The East Side branch is the original location, where the donuts are crafted each day.
Address: 2435 Wyoming Boulevard, NE Albuquerque
The West Side location is at 9311 Coors Boulevard NW, Suite QA, Albuquerque.
Inside, the store is as fun and funky as you’d expect from a business with a tattoo-style logo featuring a winged donut.
Pair your donuts with locally roasted coffee. Chai, tea, and hot chocolate are also on the menu.
Mini donuts are available. Then again, you could order this.
Doesn't the sight of these make you go all Homer Simpson?
