Having traveled all over the country, sampling pizza in every state I’ve visited, I can vouch for New Jersey – we have some of the best pizza in America. Some say New York reigns supreme, but some also say the Giants are a New York team… and we all know better. The Jets are ours too, and don’t even get me started on the Superbowl. But, back to pizza. Nationally acclaimed food website, The Daily Meal, recently released a list of the best pies in America; we had 5 pizzerias rank among the top 100.
Santillo's Brick Oven Pizza, Elizabeth - Best Sicilian Pie
Ranked #50 overall, this spot has some of the best Sicilian-style pies in the state. The Daily Meal Ranking isn't their only accolade, they've received numerous awards from New Jersey Monthly and The Star Ledger. Find them open 7 days a week for take out and delivery at 639 S. Broad Street.
Star Tavern, Orange - Best Thin Crust Pizza
If you're looking for a mouthwatering thin crust pie, head to this hot spot (ranked #51 overall). Star Tavern has been featured in the New York Times and has an extensive list of awards. They also offer a full menu and fantastic drinks. Find them at 400 High Street.
DeLorenzo's Tomato Pies, Robbinsville - Best Tomato Pie
In business for nearly 70 years and in Robbinsville for almost a decade, DeLorenzo's knows how to make New Jerseyans happy. Ranked #62 overall, their flavorful sauce stands out above the rest. Find this Zagat top rated restaurant (closed Mondays) at 2350 US Highway 33.
Papa's Tomato Pies, Robbinsville - Best Sausage Pie
Established in 1912, this local favorite is the oldest continually operating family-owned pizza restaurant in the US. I love the plain tomato pies, but this eatery (ranked #80 overall) stands out for its spectacular sausage pie. They've won numerous awards, ranked locally and nationally by CBS and NBC. Order for delivery daily or visit them at 19 Robbinsville Allentown Road.
Reservoir Tavern, Boonton - Best Specialty Pie
Ranked #99 overall, their Gatto de Potato pizza (not pictured) makes mouths water. With sliced potatoes, bacon, tomatoes, garlic and mozzarella, it's most certainly something to savor. They're closed on Sundays and Mondays but offer a full Italian menu the rest of the week, with carry out available. Find them at 92 Parsippany Boulevard.
