The massive Lehman Caves were discovered back in the 1880s, and they've been attracting thousands of visitors every year ever since. Once you're inside, you'll realize why this cave has held up as one of the most unique and awe-inspiring caverns in the country.
The caves can only be accessed by taking a guided tour. You'll have your choice between a 60-minute tour and a 90-minute tour, but you'll probably find yourself wanting to spend hours down in these magnificent caves.
As soon as you walk into the cave, you'll be in total shock of just how massive this place is. All in all, the cave contains two miles of passageways. It's considered the longest cave in the state and it definitely shows.
On the tour you'll be guided through all of the cave's different "rooms". The Talus Room is considered the biggest, at 21,511 square feet. It's also considered the tallest room at 113 feet from floor to ceiling.
As you stroll through the cavern, you'll be in awe at the variety of formations surrounding you. Stalagmites, stalactites, and helictites reach down from the ceiling and crop up from the floors. You'll feel as if you've been transported to a different planet.
It's hard to believe the crazy formations in the cave are the product of millions of years of erosion and movement. The cave's environment is active, meaning that it is still changing. Who knows, it may look a little different the next time you visit this place!
Unfortunately, the cave underwent significant mistreatment when it was first discovered. People were allowed to break off small stalactites during the cave's early tours and graffiti lines some of the walls. If you decide the tour, be sure to do your part in preserving this precious ecosystem.
Guided tours are offered year-round, except for on major holidays. People are advised to book well in advance since tours book up fast. Definitely make a reservation several weeks in advance in order to ensure your spot. This place is a truly incredible wonder that all Nevadans should witness.
