There are many, many historic homes in Nebraska that have been well maintained throughout the decades and still stand tall and strong. There are others, however, that have been given over to the destructive hands of time and decay. These homes all have their own stories, but they all seem to have reached the same fate. Who knows if these nine abandoned houses are actually haunted? They all look spooky enough to play host to scores of scary spirits.

This solidly-built stone house sits in a lonely field near Nebraska City, just begging to tell its story. The buzzard flying over it in this shot from 2003 really adds to the sense of loneliness and mystery.

The beautiful Israel Beetison House in Saunders County has a very long history dating back to its construction - by hand with hand-chiseled, local limestone - in 1874. After generations in the Beetison family, the home is now owned by developers and sits empty and alone.
