Take This Road To Nowhere In Montana To Get Away From It All

Most people who live in Montana live here to get away from it all—that’s kind of the point. But even The Last Best Place has its share of jobs and responsibilities that can be stressful, and sometimes we all need to take a step back and enjoy being near nature while reminding ourselves of why we live here in the first place.

There are some truly breathtaking scenic highways, byways and backroads in Montana. But nothing quite compares to Glacier National Park’s Going-to-the-Sun Road. This scenic mountain drive takes you through some of the park’s most picturesque spots. Read on to see why this road to nowhere in Montana is a must-do.

Parts of the road are open all year, but the majority of it is closed until it’s been plowed in the spring. Mid-summer is the best time to drive it for this reason, but always double check before you go.

There is no cost to drive Going-to-the-Sun Road. Your entrance fee to Glacier gives you access to it. Without stopping, it would take you two hours to drive the 50 mile stretch, but you’ll definitely want to stop. The scenic viewpoints are surreal.

The drive takes you through the heart of the park, and also to the top. Located at the highest point of the road, Logan Pass sits at 6,656 feet. It also sits along the Continental Divide.

You’ll find several places to enjoy a picnic along Going-to-the-Sun Road, and 5 out of the 13 campgrounds in Glacier are located along the road. So if you need to get away from it all for more than a day, you’ll have options.

Since you’ll want to see plenty of the wildlife that tends to hang out near the road (and take in the views), make sure to stop at the overlooks. Jackson Glacier Overlook is the best spot for seeing a glacier from the road.

Going-to-the-Sun Road is a challenging drive, so make sure you’ll be up for navigating a few sharp corners. And if that drive is a little too out of your way for the time being, here are some beautiful Montana byways that will also help you get away from it all.
