Some questions are best answered by those born and raised in Montana… especially if they’re about Montana. Have you been asked any of these by well-meaning out-of-staters?
1. What's so great about Montana, anyway?
"Are you kidding? How long do you have?" is the only acceptable response to this question.
2. Why are Montana people so nice?!?
We were raised right, and we've got a lot to be happy about.
3. What is Montana's motto?
"Oro y Plata," or gold and silver, named for our abundant mineral wealth. Our unofficial motto is "Montana's full."
4. Why do people drive so fast in Montana?
Because we can't be tamed. Just kidding (kind of) - most Montanans drive the speed limit, but our speed limits are quite high. They used to be non-existent.
5. How cold does a Montana winter really get?
The coldest temperature ever recorded in Montana was -70 degrees... so pretty cold.
6. How do you pronounce Choteau?
Shoh-toh. And while we're at it, Havre is Have-er.
7. Where was Beethoven's 2nd filmed?
Right here in the Treasure State.
8. Why do you hate Californians?
We do not hate Californians, nor do we hate the state of California. What we hate is the attitude that our way of living isn't good enough and must be changed. Californians that don't feel this way are welcome here. We also kind of hate this question.
9. Is Glacier National Park as pretty in person as it looks in photos?
No. It's about 100 times prettier in person.
10. What are some bragging rights Montana can claim that no other state can?
Montana was the first state to send a woman to Congress, it's the only state in the country with a triple divide, and it's the home state of Evel Knievel, just to name a few.
Some questions Montanans get asked are perfectly reasonable… and of course, some are not .
