In 2013, American Trails named Missouri ‘Best Trails State’ for its abundance of trails (nearly 1,000 miles of managed trails and 500 miles of National Recreation Trails) and the variety of activities available throughout them. There are tons of amazing walks to choose from, but the easy-peasy Shut-In Trail in Sam A. Baker State Park is guaranteed to lead you someplace amazing.
To begin the easy 2.3-mile hike, park across from Sam A. Baker Park’s dining lodge. The dog-friendly trail follows the Big Creek wooded plain, twisting along the base of Mudlick Mountain.
The trail begins with a steep descent and leads to a picturesque footbridge.

Along the way, you’ll see tons of beautiful trees—sweet gum, sycamores and cottonwoods. In the spring, you’ll come across water rushing over boulders.

Before the trail ends, leave it for a side-trip to see the Big Creek shut-ins bluff hole.
If it’s a hot day, cool down with a swim. And make sure you don't miss the trail's waterfall!
