Every city has their own really weird traditions, interests, and definition of “normal”. In St. Louis we also do weird things that people from other parts of the country do not understand. Here is a list of 9 extremely weird things only people from St. Louis do:
1. Bass in the trunk?
In St. Louis we spend 40 grand on an SUV for the room, and then fill it with amps and subs and have no place for the groceries...
2. Wanna go to the boat?
When friends come to visit from out of town and we invite them to the boat confusion ensues. As they pack their sunscreen and floaties we check our bank account and grab the keys. "Going to the boat" in St. Louis means it is time to hit the casino!
3. Get a day off work or school because the "river is up".
A legit reason to take off school or work is because you cannot get into St. Louis or out of St. Louis until the river comes down. The process can easily take days and in St. Louis every major highway in and out of the city can be affected and literally shut down the entire city.
4. We are not impressed with your Indiana culture if we refer to you as a "hoosier"
In St. Louis, a "hoosier" does not refer to anything Indiana. It is a term we use for our friends in Jefferson County!
5. Heat or AC today?
It is very possible you will use your heat and your air conditioning in the same day many times a month in St. Louis. It is very difficult to maintain a constant temperature. Sledding after breakfast and swimming after dinner, things are never boring in our town!
6. What is that noise?
We don't get concerned if we hear thunder during a snow storm, we know it's just thundersnow.
7. Tornado Sirens
We get more worked up about the "chance" of a snowstorm than we do when the tornado sirens go off.
8. St. Louis makes french toast at the first sign of a snow storm?
The minute Channel 2 announces a snow storm every store in town is cleaned out of bread, milk, and eggs!
9. Ted Drewes Frozen Custard and Christmas Trees?
Everyone knows Ted Drewes Frozen Custard is a hot commodity in St. Louis during the summer. Did you know that many St. Louis families make it a tradition to take the family to Ted Drewes at Christmas, get a frozen custard, and pick out a Christmas tree? What an awesome Christmas tradition!
