Tornadoes Commons.Wikimedia.org Missouri is no stranger to twisters, with one of the largest in recent memory touching down in Joplin in 2011. 3. Heart Disease Helen Penjam/Flickr According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading killer in the state, responsible for 25 percent of all deaths. Make sure to include some veggies with your barbecue and beer! 4. Drowning Jonsson/Flickr All our beautiful lakes, rivers and streams come with a major downside: deaths by drowning. And according to a 2015 Washington Post article, drowning deaths are on the rise in Missouri. 5. Floods Smudgedog09/Flickr Another downside to living near water: floods. The 2015 Mississippi River flood set records, cresting at its third highest level ever. 6. In 2015, the CDC released a report on the 'Most Distinctive' cause of death in every state, and Missouri's is meningitis, an infection that can turn deadly. 8. A report by the Missouri State Highway Patrol said that in 2011, Missouri had more than 3,500 deer-related traffic crashes, resulting in four deaths and nearly 400 injuries.
