A small town on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast, Pascagoula is no stranger to mystery and unexplainable events. In the 1970s, the city gained national notoriety when two Pascagoula men were allegedly abducted by aliens (you can read about that here). But that’s not the only mystifying tale associated with Pascagoula. According to local lore, the city is home to a river with a dark and haunting past that lives on to this day. Take a look:

As the story goes, Chief Altama of the Pascagoula Tribe was in love with Anola, the princess of the Biloxi Tribe; however, since the two tribes were enemies, the relationship was strictly forbidden.

So, when Anola ran off with Altama and his tribe, the Biloxi Indians became enraged and waged war on the Pascagoula Tribe.

Severely outnumbered and facing enslavement, the Pascagoula Tribe made a dire decision.

The group joined hands and began chanting a song of death as they peacefully walked into the river.

Before long, the engulfing waters of the Pascagoula River silenced the voices of the tribe….but not for good, apparently.
