Mississippi has had its fair share of mysterious occurrences. And in this case, that mysterious occurrence comes in the form of a gravity-defying hill.

Located on Turnpike Mountain Road in Burnsville, Gravity Hill has puzzled motorists and locals for decades. Countless witnesses have tried out the mysterious road for themselves, and the results are always the same – after being put in neutral, cars appear to roll uphill.

So, is it an optical illusion or is something else going on? Most attribute the phenomenon to a matter of perception (which means all of those older relatives who claimed to walk to school uphill, both ways, weren’t lying). Others believe that something supernatural may be to blame. According to local legend, cars are transported uphill by a friendly ghost who is simply trying to help travelers save on gas money, which led to the hill’s nickname, "Ghost Mountain."
