Life in the big city can be taxing. The traffic, the sprawl, and – dare we say – the rude people to contend with. Sometimes you just want to slow down the pace a bit and enjoy the scenery and small town charm that make life worthwhile.
Here, we’ve identified (with a little help from our readers) some small towns that achieve just that. Beautiful surroundings, friendly folks, and reminders of a simpler time here in Michigan.
This teeny unincorporated UP town is populated by some 300 people. We like that it sits right up against Lake Superior and boasts the impressive Big Bay Lighthouse, constructed in 1896.
This town of about 700 is situated in the northwest region of the Mitten. Come August the community fills up with old-timey engines, all restored, and reminding us of earlier times.

Tucked away near the shores of Lake Huron, this town of about 2,800 enjoys its annual Tawas Bay Summerfest Car Cruise and Show, this year in July.

The birthplace of the Meijer store and once known as the refrigerator capital of the country, this small city of about 8,400 still enjoys a quaint downtown district and lots of outdoorsy activities for the family.
This unincorporated Saginaw County community of about 1,600 was first settled in 1865 and to this day retains that small town charm.

This small city of about 11,000 swells up come July when its annual Ionia Free Fair rolls around. The event is considered the world's largest free admission fair in the world.

Once you reach the town of St. Ignace, population 2,400, you know you've finally reached the gateway of the Upper Peninsula.
Another small town not too far from Lake Huron, this community of 1,500 is considered the gateway to the state's "Sunrise Side," where you'll capture splendid views of the lake, with less of a crowd.
