There are days when no salad will do. For the times when you simply need something with a little more meat on its buns, this list has you covered. These burger joints do more than slap a patty between two pieces of bread; they make hot, delicious, melty, burger art.
1. Boston Burger Company, Somerville (and other locations)
This place is sort of tiny, but that just means the goodness is concentrated. Phantom Gourmet loves this joint and their King burger (peanut butter, bacon, fried bananas dusted in cinnamon and sugar!) made it onto the Boston Globe's Top 25 Burgers list. Pictured: the 420 burger. Those are whole mozzarella sticks on there. For real.
2. KKatie's Burger Bar, Plymouth
What do you need those arteries for anyway? Stop here for a burger that may stop your heart, but hopefully just with joy. Pictured: The Plymouth Rock
3. The Fix, Worcester
Warning: Do not venture anywhere near this place if you're trying to stick to your diet. Boston's first true burger bar, The Fix will provide you with AMAZING burgers and hand-churned ice cream frappes. Pictured: The Crunchy. And yes, those are potato chips.
4. Gibbet Hill Grill, Groton
This burger establishment is no "joint". Gibbet Hill Grill's fare is farm to table in the truest sense; they literally have their own farm on the premises. That makes their burgers out-of-this-world fresh. Pictured: Gibbet Hill Farm Burger with pork belly confit, smoked gouda, and roasted red pepper mayonnaise!
5. Strip T's, Watertown
Some of us like a bit of sophistication with our burger. Look no further than Strip T's. The saucy name belies a selection of thoughtfully assembled and incredibly delicious burgers. Pictured: smoked miso, lemon aioli, pickled onion, seasoned roll.
6. R.F. O'Sullivan & Son, Somerville (and other locations)
Home of the Phantom Gourmet's "Best Burger in Boston." Even with that honor, this place doesn't put on airs. The food is served at great prices and with incredible flavors.
7. Max Burger, Longmeadow
This joint featuers award-winning all-natural burgers, American-style comfort food and a large selection of craft beers. Pictured: The Bacon Mushroom Demi with Gruyere cheese, mushroom demi glaze, bacon, crispy fried onions, arugula, and French onion aioli.
8. Lucky's Lounge, Boston
Sinatra and sliders. If you like those two things, you'll be right at home at Lucky's Lounge. This place has Sinatra Sunday and burgers that are so good, they'll blow you right back to the 50s.
9. Grass Fed, Jamaica Plain
In the mood for a break from the meat-marathon? Grass Fed has you covered. Try their crispy, fried, cheddar-stuffed Portobello Burger. Pair that with a side of garlic-truffle parmesan fries. Your mouth may faint.
10. Craigie On Main, Cambridge
Just because you slap a high price tag on a burger, that doesn't make it gourmet. Luckily this isn't an issue at Craigie On Main. Their burgers may not be cheap (~$18), but you definitely get what you pay for.
11. The Red Nun Bar & Grill, Dennis Port and Chatham
There's nothing chaste about these burgers. Pictured: Asian-style duck and pork burger with prosciutto mayo, Asian cole slaw, and picante pepper corn ketchup. That's one red burger.
12. White Hut, Springfield
Keeping it simple and classic, we have White Hut. No fancy burger names here, just plain deliciousness. You can't beat a mouth-watering burger for $3.25.
I am not lying when I say that it was hard to put this list together without salivating. So many incredible burgers, only so much room in my belly. What’s your favorite place to grab a burger in Massachusetts?
