There is no shortage of scenic hikes in MD. We’re also fortunate that there are a handful of gorgeous waterfalls in Maryland as well, but the following spot seems to be everyone’s favorite (and for good reason). Swallow Falls State Park has not one, but two grand waterfalls that are connected by a short and scenic hiking trail. We recommend the hike to Muddy Creek Falls and Swallow Falls at least once, but you may want to experience it throughout the seasons – especially in autumn! Hop on the Swallow Falls Canyon Trail for a scenic waterfall hike near Oakland, Maryland, and enjoy the phenomenal natural beauty of the Old Line State.

What is one of the best small towns in the area for a getaway?

One of the most well-known and best small towns in the area, of course, is Gettysburg. The Battle of Gettysburg that took place here turned out to be the largest battle of the Civil War. As such, there is a wealth of history, monuments, and other relics that provide insights into this bloody, yet significant time in our nation’s history. One of the most famous attractions in the United States, the site draws thousands of people from all over the world every year. More than just a getaway, its epic history won’t soon be forgotten.

How far is Harper’s Ferry from Baltimore?

Harpers Ferry is just a little over an hour’s drive, straight west, from Baltimore. Depending on where you’re coming from, just get on Interstate 70 until you see the turn-off for Highway 15. In short order, this will then turn into Highway 340. Once you cross over the Shenandoah River, just follow the signs to the entrance.

Although only a small town, Harper’s Ferry holds a vast amount of history, including that related to the slave revolt surrounding the work of abolitionist John Brown. You can learn more about him and this tumultuous time at the John Brown Wax Museum. If you enjoy hiking, you can find some great trails at the Harpers Ferry National Historic Park. Plan to spend a full day here, as there is so much to see, do, and enjoy.
