Maryland is filled with things to do… some more touristy than others. We recommend visiting ALL locations on this list but if it’s a bit more peace and quiet you seek, then check out the alternative spots.
Instead of Baltimore...
Frederick is a mix of city and small town. Get your fill of local businesses, art, and top-rated restaurants without the hoards of tourists.
Instead of the National Aquarium...
Visit Calvert Marine Museum.
Not many people know that Calvert Marine Museum is also home to underwater creatures. While there are far less than the National Aquarium, you'll still be wowed by the animals and have fun learning about their natural habitat.
Instead of Antietam Battlefield...
Visit Monocacy Battlefield.
Monocacy Battlefield is a bit quieter than Antietam, and also offers sprawling rural views. Be sure to check out the many historic homes on the grounds that are full of charm.
Instead of Deep Creek Lake...
Visit New Germany State Park.
Also in Western Maryland, New Germany State Park has a gorgeous lake and cabins available to rent. Check it out at least once.
Instead of Annapolis...
If it's water views and boats you seek, then head over the bridge to the small town of Oxford. This historic spot is underrated with its quaint beach, boutiques, and ferry rides.
Instead of Calvert Cliffs...
Visit Matoaka Beach.
Jamie Alvarenga / Only In Your State
Calvert Cliffs is a must-do at least once, but it can get overcrowded during warmer months. Instead, head to the little known Matoaka Beach which also has white clay cliffs full of fossils.
Instead of Ocean City...
Visit Sandy Point State Park.
Nothing beats the Ocean but Sandy Point State Park is also splendid on a summer day. Meander up and down the beach while taking in views of the Bay Bridge. It's best to get here early.
