Most People Don't Know There's A Forest Hiding In This Maine City

Maine certainly has no shortage of options when it comes to exploring the outdoors. In fact, those who love nature will find that Maine offers everything from beach escapes to green, lush forest. But, what about those who love the outdoors, but find they need to be a little closer to civilization than the 100-mile-wilderness? We recommend the Bangor City Forest!

The Bangor City Forest is comprised of over 680 acres of wildlife habitat and forest.

And it's located on the border of Bangor (surprise!) and Orono.

The area includes some wonderful trails that allow visitors an escape from the city without having to get in the car.

And, there are more than 13 miles of walking, hiking, cycling, running and cross-country skiing trails.

But, don't look to the forest as just a place to exercise.

If you have the time, we recommend simply meandering around to enjoy the environment.

One of the best features of the Bangor City Forest is the additional access to the Orono Bog Boardwalk.

This area offers an opportunity to learn about a typical Maine bog.

And the displays will help answer any questions you have.

Access to the Bog Boardwalk and to Bangor Land Trust's Walden Parke mean an extended network of over 20 miles of trails.

Now that Spring is here, this will definitely be on our list of ways to get outside in Maine!

To get to the Bangor City Forest, take I-95 to the Hogan Road exit. Head north on Hogan Road until it ends at Stillwater Avenue. You’ll make a right onto Stillwater Avenue, and then a left onto Kittredge Road through a parking lot. At the end of Kittredge Road, you can park at the top of the hill or continue to the other parking lot at the bottom of the hill. Enjoy!
