We’ve done a few different posts including rare images of old Maine, but when we came across these we photos of Vinalhaven, we knew it was time for another one. If you’ve been to any of the islands off the coast of our state, you know how incredibly small-town they feel. They are, in some ways, a perfect representation of the way Maine once was. These photos of mid-1950s Vinalhaven will prove that life was slow and deliberate, much like it is in many places today.

3. Remnants of the granite industry at Hurricane Island.

These are the remnants of an old steam engine. This area was an important one for the granite industry, but when it became less profitable those involved in the quarries left. A visit to the area will still show remnants of where granite was cut out of the ground.
