I am somewhat a cliche'. I grew up running around barefoot on a farm in Kentucky.
I love writing, art, sunshine, all animals and my incredibly patient husband, who tolerates my "crazy animal lady" side.
Kentucky is a beautiful state, and many residents stay here their entire lifetime, raise their families and continue the cycle of Kentuckians. There are people that leave to explore other states, experience different climates, or take a more influential career position. There is no place like home though, and once gone, people tend to realize special things about our state not found in others.
Here are 10 things Kentuckians miss when they leave the Bluegrass State:
Some of us that live in the Louisville area HATE Derby time because of the onset of heavy traffic, out of town visitors, pollution and festivities on a grand scale. This includes the world’s biggest fireworks show, Thunder Over Louisville and all the littering and air pollution it brings. We can’t get anywhere in specific areas in less than an hour, and… people change during Derby. When sitting in another state Derby week, with the festivities sweeping the media nationwide, you remember horse racing is part of who we are.
Those that like to drink Kentucky Bourbon will find less variety in the bars and liquor stores of other states, and pricier depending on the state. Some people make trips back to Kentucky not only to visit friends or family, but to pick up a few bottles of their favorite home distilled bourbon as well.
Kentucky has some of the most incredibly scenic forests in the country. Residents are blessed with Daniel Boone National Forest, which is home to Red River Gorge, along with other amazing spots to appreciate nature.
The Gorge is an amazing place to camp, hike, fish, swim and just experience the great outdoors. There are places within its borders that people visit annually, just for the atmosphere. Some consider it a truly magical place.
We have an abundance of amazing little country kitchen style diners, like Barbara Lee’s, scattered across the state. Locals can enjoy homemade biscuits and gravy, fried chicken, real mashed potatoes, cornbread, and other Kentucky favorites often not found in other states.
This is one of the most tasty pies you will ever let melt in your mouth. Rich with chocolate, nuts and a sweet, gooey filling, Derby Pie is an unforgettable dessert that is absolutely to drool for.
Kentuckians have their own way of pronouncing words, describing things and giving directions. When you go to other states, this becomes quite apparent.
Many other states have only 2 or 3 seasons, where as we have 4. My Dad was transferred here via L&N Railroad in the 50s, and they fell in love with the 4 seasons. They look forward to each change, regardless of the cold or damp that comes with it. (Personally, I could do without winter. )
We are home to Cumberland Falls, home of the renowned Moonbow, along with the great Ohio River, the scenic Land Between the Lakes and plenty of other water paradises. Some don’t realize how beautiful our state is until they leave it.
Kentucky has some of the friendliest and most hard working people in the US. We are a state of primarily kind hearted people who are always willing to help a neighbor, animal, or just a stranger out. Our farmers are among the friendliest and hardest working people you will ever meet.
Those who dispute the beauty of Kentucky are quite mad. We are a beautiful state and good hearted people. You may dream of leaving the Bluegrass State one day, but rest assured, you will miss something about it. One may not think so while packing, but eventually, a reminder will come of the beauty left behind. What do you think you would miss about Kentucky if you left?
