When it comes to small Kansas communities, there is no shortage of charm and uniqueness to go around. However, in terms of this northeast Kansas town, there is something extra special due in part to its history, vintage architecture, and ample fishing opportunities.

Founded in 1854, Valley Falls was originally named Grasshopper Falls in honor of the nearby Grasshopper River, which— interestingly enough—was later renamed the Delaware River because of bad publicity from the 1870s grasshopper invasion.

Once the name of the river changed, so did the name of the town.
Today, Valley Falls is home to nearly 2,000 friendly residents, 60 locally owned businesses, and plenty of beautiful scenery to go around.

Quite possibly one of the biggest draws to the town (aside from its friendly folks and beautiful cityscape, of course) is that of its close proximity to the Delaware River, which brings in thousands of fishermen from both near and far each year.

Not only is the Delaware River just down the road from Valley Falls, so is the 11,000-acre Perry Reservoir, which boasts some of the best catfish in the state.
