Everybody loves a fabulous restaurant they can visit over and over, and we here at Only in Kansas have a few “must-visits” to recommend. Thanks to you, our awesome readers, we have compiled a list of 15 mouthwatering Kansas restaurants, which include (in no particular order):
1. Nelson's Landing (Leonardville)
If this hand-battered chicken fried steak with homemade gravy isn't making your mouth water, you best get your eyes checked... (In addition to their famous chicken fried steak, be sure to check out their daily specials.)
2. Meridy's Restaurant (Russell)
When I worked as a reporter, Meridy's came recommended over and over, but I never once stopped. Fast forward to when I covered a politician's meet-and-greet at the establishment and my life would be forever changed. Be sure to try their homemade biscuits and gravy--you WON'T regret it.
3. Crawford County Chicken (Crawford County)
I have had numerous people ask why Crawford County Chicken hasn't made a list... and it's a valid question. With six delicious options (Chicken Annie's Original, Pittsburg; Chicken Mary's, Pittsburg;
Gebhardt's Chicken and Dinners, Mulberry; Barto's Idle Hour, Frontenac ; Chicken Annie's of Girard;
Pichler's Chicken Annie's, Pittsburg) you can't go wrong. Which chicken is your favorite?
4. Guy & Mae's Tavern (Williamsburg)
If you have been around Only in Kansas for awhile, G&M Tavern should be a familiar name. The unsuspecting restaurant and bar serve some of the best BBQ in not just the state, but entire the country.
5. Carriage Crossing Restaurant and Bakery (Yoder)
For pastries, fried chicken, cat fish, and other homemade goodness, there is truly no beating this Yoder gem. After you finish eating, be sure to walk around town for a unique experience.
6. Ad Astra Food & Drink (Strong City)
Ad Astra, the Kansas state slogan meaning "Through hardships to the stars," is the perfect name for this quaint and memorable cafe. (By the way, the pictured masterpiece is the Fig jam and goat cheese bison burger on a soft pretzel bun with homemade chips. You're welcome.)
7. J's Carryout (Emporia)
Why would you EVER choose to carry out from a bland, run-of-the-mill fast-food chain when you can get a fresh and flavorful meal from this Emporia favorite?
8. Charlie's Mexican Restaurant (Leoti)
Amazing and authentic Mexican cuisine located in the heart of Kansas? Don't mind if I do!
9. Effie's Place (Rush Center)
One of the best hamburgers in the entire state is handmade with love by Effie Crowell, the 91-year-old owner and cook of this Rush Center tradition. Be sure to order the signature Effie: an unforgettable 1/2 lb. burger served with a side of freshly cut fries.
10. Stockyard Restaurant (Fredonia)
Served in the same location as the Fredonia Livestock Auction house is Stockyards; a cozy, western-style restaurant that serves up American classics (burgers, steaks, seafood, etc.). Be sure to come early or you may not get a table.
11. Kelley's Grill & Bar (Basehor)
Call me old fashioned, but I enjoy mashed potatoes with my chicken fried steak... however, after seeing these thick-cut, perfectly-seasoned steak fries, I may have to reconsider...
12. The Chef (Manhattan)
When it comes to the most important meal of the day, there is no beating The Chef. Be sure to stop in the morning after the big K-State game to keep the good times rolling (or to console yourself... whichever the case).
13. Dave's Pizza Oven (Coldwater)
Not just perfect pizzas, but desserts, too (pictured).
14. Neives' Mexican Restaurant (Winfield)
Let's face it: You can never go wrong with a stellar recipe handed down from generation-to-generation... I only wish I had Neives’s smothered burrito recipe passed down to me. Yum!
15. R-B Drive In (Hutchinson)
Some towns have all the luck... Case in point, Hutchinson has not only a good BBQ joint (Roy's), they also have a great place for burgers, thanks to R-B. Tip: Try the onion rings.
