I have said it before and I will say it again: There is really NO reason to spend a bunch of money on gas (or plane fare), food, and hotels in order to take a canyon adventure. Instead of wasting all of your hard earned money traveling to that one canyon in Arizona, make plans to take this unforgettable canyon hike in Kansas:
Nestled within Kanopolis State Park, Horsethief Canyon is a truly unique Kansas attraction that is complete with several caves and crevices that you would expect to find in any canyon.
When hiking the stunning 4.4-mile trail, you can expect to find a series of distinct landscapes, including that of the rolling plains...
...worn (but smooth) sandstone walking paths...
...and scenic views of jagged canyons that you won't find anywhere else in Kansas.
While we love all these aspects of the hike (plus the fact that the colors look beautiful this time of year!), our favorite part of Horsethief Canyon has to be the caves scattered about the trail.
(Yes; you can totally enter the caves if you so desire!)
As per Backpacker , access to the trail can be found on "I-70 W 109 mi. to Salina; S on I-135 2.2 mi. and R onto KS 140 W 20.4 mi. to KS 141; S on 141 10 mi., take R on Pheasant Ridge Rd. and R on Horsethief Rd. N to trailhead."
