The Historic Small Town That Every Hoosier Should Visit At Least Once

Corydon, Indiana is a small town that is home to just over 3,000 Hoosiers. This Ohio River town is located in Harrison County and has a long and fascinating history.

Corydon's name is derived from the hymn, "A Pastoral Elegy" in which a shepherd bears the name Corydon. The name and elegy of origin is said to have been selected by the founder, Edward Smith's daughter.

Corydon became the second territorial capital of Indiana (before it was a state) in 1813 and upon achieving statehood, Corydon became the first official capital of Indiana in 1816. It served as Indiana's capital for just over eleven years (including its time as a territory capital), becoming a thriving and bustling little town, but the state capital eventually became the heart of the state, Indianapolis, in 1825, for geographic reasons.

Despite losing its place as the state capital, Corydon continued to remain important to Indiana's early history. During the civil war, this small town remained the only spot in the state to see a pitched battle. General Morgan of the Confederacy overtook the small town, though it was returned to its former state when the Union won the war. You can view this historic site today at the Battle of Corydon Memorial Park, which serves as a historic reminder of this fight, but also a means of outdoor fun and site of natural beauty for residents.

Today, you can still visit several historic sites in this small town, including the state's first capital building, Indiana's first treasury building, the Constitution Elm Memorial, the Posey House, the Kintner House Inn, and much more.
