With 2016 coming to a close, it’s frequently felt like this wild year has attempted to throw in every last punch possible before its annual reign ends. But in the spirit of good news, early this morning all seven spelunkers who were trapped in Indiana’s largest cave have now been rescued.

Seven spelunkers were due back from a 15-hour adventure early Sunday morning; their families began to grow worried when the explorers were still not home by Sunday afternoon.

The site of the expedition was Binkley Cave, Indiana's largest cave and the 11th largest cave system in our country. After a connection between Blowing Hole and Binkley was discovered in recent years, the cave's size was adjusted to over 43 miles long.

After water levels rose and blocked the exit to the cave, the spelunkers found themselves stuck underground.

Rescuers entered Binkley Cave Sunday around 1:00 p.m., and found all of the explorers safe after an extensive search underground. As of 1:00 a.m. this morning, all seven of the explorers have been rescued from the cave and have been treated for hypothermia and exposure.

Equipped with life jackets, heaters and other important equipment, rescuers brought two of the explorers out of the cave first. They were immediately treated for hypothermia and exposure. After several more hours, a rescue crew made up of four workers were able to get to the remaining five spelunkers. Indiana's Department of Natural Resources has been keeping everyone up to date, and reports that all spelunkers are doing well and will be fine.
