Indiana is a great place to live, but it’s definitely had its fair share of disasters. From massive flooding to deadly tornados, natural disasters have shaken the Hoosier state. However, the worst disaster of all was this unexpected explosion that occurred in 1963.

The Coliseum located at the Indiana State Fairgrounds is a popular event location for all types of events, but most popularly, the home of the Indy Fuel ice hockey team. While this incredible building offers great memories for visitors and spectators, it also was the site of the worst tragedy in Indiana history.

October 31st, 1963 was a Halloween that many Hoosiers would never forget. Fans gathered for a special Holiday on Ice performance at the Coliseum. This family-friendly event ended in disaster, however, when an explosion killed 74 Hoosiers and injured almost 400. The fire was caused by a rusty propane tank in the concession stand, which exploded when reaching an electrically powered popcorn machine. The sudden blast killed 54 immediately, while 20 more Hoosiers died of injuries after the explosion.

The Coliseum has since been renovated, but a plaque still honors the lives of those lost during this tragic accident. Though more than 50 years have passed since this tragedy, the innocent Hoosiers killed and injured will never be forgotten.
