Indiana has its fair share of ghost stories and paranormal activity sightings. But what do you think the most haunted house or structure in the entire state is? We’ve all heard about haunted houses in Gar, former mental hospitals in Indianapolis, and the Willard Library in Evansville. But the most haunted building of all is easily the French Lick Springs Hotel in historic French Lick.
This famous hotel was first constructed in 1845, with additions built on in 1901. Now a part of the French Lick Resort, this stunning hotel has a dark history, one that many Hoosiers swear is dusted with paranormal activity and ghost sightings.
Thomas Taggart, the former owner of the French Lick Springs Hotel, is rumored to still haunt the grounds. Many claim they smell his tobacco smoke and spot mists and other odd sights near the hotel’s service elevator. In fact, many visitor claim that Taggart still manages to operate this elevator when the hotel is bustling.

The stories don’t end there. The staff claims Taggart still holds parties and they often hear dancing and laughing in the ballroom, even when no one is inside. Sightings of Taggart on horseback riding through the hallways have also been spread. In fact, the entire sixth floor of the hotel is presumed to be haunted and the staff often receive phone calls from rooms without occupants. Many also claim weird activity often occurs on the seventh floor, as well.

These ghosts stories don’t all involve Taggart, though. In a room where a new bride committed suicide, red stains were found to have appeared in a bathtub. The ghost of a former bellhop has also appeared in photographs taken of the bellhop stand.
