There are numerous haunted places in Indiana, ranging from stories of friendly ghosts to those of gruesome murders. There’s one place in central Indiana that has a very dark past and may be the most haunted building in the state. You don’t have to believe in ghosts for the history of this evil place to turn your blood cold.
People with mental illnesses are treated considerably better today than they were in the early 1800s. In 1848, this building, the Indiana Hospital for the Insane (also known as the Central State Asylum) opened its doors. Its residents ranged from those suffering from depression and suicidal thoughts to those with extreme mental imbalances.
Over the years, the number of admitted patients grew, and eventually there was a small community formed within the many buildings on the hospitals grounds. Underground tunnels connecting the buildings were also dug.

In this hospital's prime, there was not very much scientific research into mental illnesses. As a result, treatment methods varied from restraining patients to chaining and shackling them in dark, underground basements. Patients were treated like barbarians rather than humans and some lived in total darkness and restraint.

Patients who died at the asylum were buried in unmarked graves, and sometimes in mass graves, as uncovered when the grounds were being restructured. While many deny that this site is haunted, former workers on the grounds and the restored Medical History Building claim to have heard screaming from the tunnels or have spotted orbs and ghosts on the grounds.
