At just under 7,000 people, Metropolis is not a super-sized town. It is located in Southern Illinois, off the Ohio River and bordering near Kentucky. It’s a small town with strong community values. But there is something super about it…
1. In 1972, DC Comics declared that Metropolis, Illinois was home to Superman.
In fact, the Illinois Legislature went so far as to pass a resolution in 1972 as well, declaring Metropolis "Hometown of Superman."
2. People visit here...a lot.
One of the main reasons people visit this town is because they want to see Superman's hometown. There are tours of all varieties and plenty of things to see. It is obvious right away that this is Superman's home and the town is open for you to explore it. The town is quite busy in June when comic book collectors from all over the world come to partake in "The Superman Celebration."
3. The Superman statue never ceases to amaze.
This statue stands 15 feet tall in Superman Square. The bottom photo gives you a sense of just how imposing this statue is. People from all over the world have assumed the pose in front of this icon.
4. There are even more photo opportunities.
Whether you are in street clothes or are dressed up as one of your favorite Superman characters (definitely not a rare occurrence down here), there are plenty of fun things for you to pose in front of.
5. Make sure to look above.
It's a bird, it's a plane...it's Superman flying out of the side of the building! Lots of places have some sort of Superman tribute to look out for.
6. The Superman Museum is amazing.
Whether you are casually interested in Superman or are a Super-fan, you will love this museum. Superman has been a huge part of American pop culture since most of us were born. This museum covers the history from Superman's inception till now, with all sorts of memorabilia for you to enjoy. In fact, there are 20,000+ items. Good luck even seeing everything. It's been named the #1 Small Town Attraction in America. You'll see why once you visit.
