Mining used to be a huge part of Illinois’ economy. It was the way a lot of people made their livelihood. In a lot of ways, it put Illinois on the map. But people don’t really understand what mining is like, or what miners’ lives were like. But you can experience just what mining life is like in an unlikely place: the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

This was the first exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry, around since 1933.
