Most Idahoans know of our state’s extremely rich history in mining; after all, it was gold that brought the first permanent settlers here and made Idaho a territory in 1863. Over a century ago people came from all over the country to strike gold since Idaho was, and still is, home to some of the world’s most abundant mineral areas. Although today many of the booming mining towns of the gold rush era are quiet and the mines dry, Idaho still produces the most newly mined silver in the entire country. When it comes to minerals and gem stones, Idaho is still very well off (they don’t call use the Gem State for no reason!). At the Crystal Gold Mine, you’ll be able to experience this incredible history firsthand. Plan a visit to this mine and you’ll really see what it was like to be a late 19th century gold miner!
Crystal Gold Mine is located near Kellogg, Idaho in what was once referred to as the Coeur d'Alene Mining District but is now known as the Silver Valley. It's open seven days a week beginning February 14th and through the end of the year. The mining tour is a family friendly activity that the adults are sure to love just as much as the kids.
The history of this specific gold mine is truly fascinating. Although it's not known who exactly worked in this mine, it is known that a gold prospector named Tom Irwin was the first person to discover a gold vein in the area in 1879. Irwin built a cabin near the mine and for this reason it is believed he was the one to operate it.
In 1881, somebody (perhaps Irwin) blasted the hill where the mine is located with dynamite, hiding its entrance. All of the tools and mine cars remained inside. It's believed that whoever hid the mine intended to come back at some point. However, the mine remained hidden for over a hundred years. It was rediscovered in 1991 and then was rendered into a tourist attraction in 1996.
It's hard to believe the mine remained completely empty and forgotten for over a century! But that's what makes touring the mine even more exciting. You'll really feel like you're experiencing an important piece of Idaho history.
During the underground tour, a guide will explain to you exactly how the miners worked with things like "hand steels" and "single and double jacks." You'll see the original tools and walk along the original mine car tracks!
You can even see for yourself the veins of gold and silver in the walls of the mine! Even during the summer months the mine remains a chilly temperature, so don't forget to bring a jacket.
Weather permitting, purchase of a mine tour guarantees an hour of free gold panning which is sure to be a hit with the kids.
Crystal Gold Mine provides a truly unique experience you won't be able to find anywhere else. It's the "hidden gems" like these that make the Gem State the best place to live.
