There is something incredibly comfortable about visiting an old country general store in a small town. Sometimes, it’s the only place around for miles, but honestly, I would visit these 9 charming general stores in Hawaii regardless; I would much rather spend my money to feel nostalgia than at a gas station chain.
1) Hasegawa General Store, Hana
A run-down general store with lots of history and everything from packaged food items, hardware, fishing gear, and souvenirs. Items will be a little more expensive here, simply because there isn’t much supply in the area.
2) Kaupo General Store, Kula
A convenient store perfect for grabbing a cold drink and some souvenirs, Kaupo also has an excellent collection of antiques on display.
3) Hygienic Store, Oahu
Located on Kamehameha Highway in Kaneohe is this general store full of nostalgia, and according to several Yelp users, it has not changed in decades.
4) T Komodo Store & Bakery, Maui
Open since 1916, this upcountry Maui shop is known for their cream puffs, and being the perfect spot to stop for breakfast after catching a sunrise atop Haleakala.
5) Hamakua General Store, Honokaa
A charming little general store is nestled within this tiny community reminiscent of Main Street U.S.A – one main street, lined with a post office, bank, schoolhouse, general store, police station, etc.
6) Honolua General Store, Lahaina
The exterior is still pretty charming, and they have a cool café, but gone are the days of old country charm and nostalgia after the store's latest remodel.
7) Hali’imaile General Store, Makawao
Though called a general store, this establishment is actually a stellar seafood restaurant with a quaint country atmosphere.
8) Waimea General Store, Waimea
A lovely store that is perfect for picking up some souvenirs – including gourmet Hawaiian treats, books, and travel items. Supposedly, there is also a friendly store cat that will come greet you as you walk in.
9) Puako General Store, Waimea
A wide selection of gifts, sourvenirs, grab and go food, ice cream, cold beer, and more fill this charming family-run store.
We would love to hear your nostalgic stories about visiting any of these Hawaii general stores in the comments.
