God, family and food are some of the most important aspects of a southern life. Here in Georgia, tradition means everything to us. Some people may just not understand why, but to us it’s a no-brainer. Here are nine awesome traditions you’ll only understand if you’re from Georgia:
1. Storytelling
Storytelling is at the heart of our culture and can still be seen today in places such as The Wren's Nest. The Wren's Nest is a home museum dedicated to preserving the legacy of Joel Chandler Harris, an author who recreated the oral story the Brer Rabbit tales in print. Storytelling is still performed every Saturday at 1p.m. at The Wren's Nest.
2. Going to church every Sunday, Wednesday and sometimes Thursday
Religion is really important to us in the south, so expect to go to church multiple times per week if you want to hang with us.
3. We do big family get-togethers for every season, reason and holiday
After God, family is the second most important aspect of a southern lifestyle. Big family get-togethers are a must every holiday or occasion.
4. The ringing of the chapel bell after a Georgia victory
This Georgia tradition started in 1890 when freshman students were ordered to ring the bell until midnight to announce the victory of a Georgia football game.
5. Georgia ladies always dress up for collegiate football games
You may think Georgia ladies are a little weird for dressing in their best for a UGA football game, but around here it's just the norm.
6. Sitting outside on the porch for hours
Sitting outside on the porch relaxing on a cool summer evening is something that we can do for hours. Georgia does have fantastic weather and we do love to enjoy it every chance we get.
7. We say "yes ma'am" and "yes sir" no matter the age of the recipient.
Some people who are not from Georgia may be surprised to hear someone older than them address them as ma'am or sir. Believe me, you heard right. We just strongly believe in having manners no matter who you're speaking to.
8. We put food at the heart of everything.
Whenever we do have a big get together (whether it's with friends or family,) food is going to be at the center of it all. Our food traditions truly unite us.
9. Heart, integrity and tradition mean everything to us--and most of all, we love our state.
Perhaps the biggest Georgia tradition of all is the love for and preservation of our Georgia traditions. We're honest, loving and loyal to a fault!
