10 Truly Incredible Restaurants In Maine You Can Only Visit In The Summer

If you've been in Maine a long time, you know that we have some pretty specific seasons. As a warm-weather lover I might be biased, but I think spring and summer just might be the best. (Note to Maine's mother nature: I can do without mud season). But, with warmer months in Maine comes the inevitable tourists and visitors. While many complain and say that they clog up our restaurants and make traffic unbearable, we have a different take on it.

Without these yearly summer visitors, these seasonal restaurants might NEVER be open. So, we'll take the good with the bad. And while we're at it, we'll be heading straight for these spots that are only open in the season. Get there while you can or risk having to wait an entire year!

1. Schutty's Seafood, West Bath

We love Schutty's because it's so unexpected. Sure there are tons of seafood shacks in Maine, but this one is hiding in plain sight. Next to a car dealership.

The menu has all the fried classics down to a tasty science, but some sophisticated surprises are to be had - like fish tacos with fresh Asian slaw and homemade "baha" sauce. Be sure to try the unique lobster egg roll. They're officially open for the season, but occasionally change their opening hours and days when the weather is really bad. Check on Facebook. 2. The Well, Jordan's Farm, Cape Elizabeth

This seasonal spot has people coming back for the amazingly fresh food (much of it sourced right from Jordan's Farm), beautiful pastoral setting and unique outdoor seating... perfect on a warm summer evening. The most unique part just might be the setting. You can choose to sit in small gazebo-type areas or right out in the open next to the flower garden. 3. Spinney's Restaurant, Popham Beach

Despite rumors, Spinney's is indeed open for the 2017 season! Folks seem to be divided over this spot, but that's what happens when just about everyone you meet has been there. Try anything on the menu, especially with a side of onion rings. Parking is dicey in the parking lot, but to make up for it they've built a lovely back deck over the beach for this season! 4. Becky's Seafood, Lubec

Becky's food truck is tucked away so if you're not paying attention, you may miss the chance for one of the best lobster rolls in the area. If you're looking to branch out, try the unique smoked salmon sticks. Check them out at 145 Main Street, Lubec / 207-733-2228.

5. The Spirit Restaurants, Kennebunk

This just might be the most unique restaurant on this list! What makes The Spirit Restaurant so special is its authenticity. The 125-schooner was built in New England and served as an educational vessel crossing the globe as a goodwill ambassador for The Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The menu is focused on local, small plates with specials available as well. If you love seafood, you certainly won't be disappointed at the menu - there's lots to choose from including a lobster roll - though, at $21, it might rock your budget a bit. 6. Earth at Hidden Pond, Kennebunkport

Located within luxury boutique hotel, Hidden Pond, Earth is a delightful place to spend a meal. Their slow food and farm-to-table feel will delight foodies. Everything is created with great care and, while some say they're on the small side, the portions will certainly satisfy. They're open now and will be until November. 7. Morse's Cribstone Grill, Harpswell / Bailey's Island

Morses's is officially open for business! If you're in Harpswell, you're already probably a happy Mainer. But, if you need a bit of a boost, enjoy a Shipwrecked Margarita outside at Morse's. 8. The Lost Kitchen, Freedom

This remote spot is one of Maine's most wonderful hidden gems. And we mean that in a very literal sense. It's tucked away in tiny Freedom, Maine but that doesn't mean people haven't found their way there. When it's open in the season the tiny restaurant in a former mill is packed. In fact, you probably won't be getting reservations this time around. But, you can call them now for next season! Call them on: 207- 382-3333

9. Blair Hill Inn, Greenville

The food here is incredible, but it’s the unforgettable setting that really impresses us. The Blair Hill Inn, located in beautiful Greenville, was once a gentleman's estate and a breeding farm. It was built as a mansion in 1891 and has been restored to become a boutique hotel with truly unique decor. Today, the bed and breakfast features ten rooms, set on 21 beautiful acres. 10. Portland Lobster Company, Portland

The only thing better than the view at Portland Lobster Company are the lobster rolls. And, the only thing better than the lobster rolls is the summertime live music on the deck. Head here for some typical Maine seafood or just enjoy drinks while dancing under the stars.
