Devastating Wildfires Rage Through Parts Of Florida

Florida is under a state of emergency as over 100 fires continue to scorch the land. According to the Florida Forest Service, the damage has totaled nearly 30,000 acres. Thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate from their homes and, despite bits of rain and enormous aid from the Florida National Guard, this heartbreaking situation has not yet been defeated. As brush fires continue to burn in Florida, firefighters have been working tirelessly to manage the problem in any way possible.

The map below, courtesy of the Florida Forest Service, shows the active wildfires as of April 23rd.

Thousands of residents have been evacuated from their homes, some of which have been completely engulfed in the wake of these fires.

In Collier County, the fire has burned nearly 6,000 acres and is only 20% contained at this point.

In areas near Orlando and Polk Counties, the massive flames burn nearly 100 feet tall. These particular fires may be a result of arson, according to officials.

The fire that recently occurred in Lee County, near Fort Myers, was started by a single cigarette, carelessly dropped in a particularly arid climate. While the flames have been contained, nearly 400 acres were scorched as a result.

As light rains continue to reach the state today, there is hope that the hard-working firefighters can continue to make progress on the crisis.
