As someone who grew up in Delaware there are tons of things that I love about this state. BUT, there are definitely some things about living here that really stink. Here are some that top my list of pet peeves.
1. Beach traffic
If you are trying to drive south in Delaware from about May to September, plan on an extra hour or so, especially on a Friday evening or Saturday morning.
2. The Christiana Mall during the holidays
I like the Christina Mall and the diversity of stores that you can't really find elsewhere in Delaware. But, during the holiday shopping season it drives me NUTS because it is packed to the gills with shoppers. Good for the economy; bad for those who don't like the crowds, parking nightmares, and long lines.
Every spring, round about mid April, Delaware explodes into a cloud of yellow dust. Pollen season makes most of us miserable to some extent, even if we don't have allergies. Between the sniffing, sneezing, and wadded up tissues, we have to wash the car all the time to take off the yellow sheen.
4. Construction congestion on I-95
When is there ever NOT construction happening on the Delaware stretch of I-95? The congestion alone can be bad.
I didn't come up with this term, but it's one I've heard from residents of Delaware's beach community residents. A mix of tourist and moron, a touron can be many things. I like to think of them as the people who feed the seagulls at the beach while they poop all over you!
6. The lack of media attention...mostly
Tons of great things happen in the state of Delaware, and some not-so-great things too. But it seems like the only time we get any national media attention is when a president, a vice president, or someone who wants to be one or the other visits.
It seems like all too frequently, a new housing development pops up in the middle of an old farm field. And sometimes those new developments aren't well situated with roads not meant to accommodate the traffic.
Winter seems to turn Delaware's roads into an asphalt version of Swiss cheese. Most of the time the potholes are just filled up with tar and chip, basically slapping a band-aid over a gaping wound.
Sometimes knowing a lot of people in this small state is a great thing, and sometimes it's like one big high school. If you don't know what you're up to, ask someone else; they've probably heard something.
10. Out of state drivers
The ones who tailgate us because we're 'only' doing ten over the speed limit. The ones who honk at tractors and farm vehicles on the road. The ones who zip in and out of traffic like maniacs.
11. Lack of public transportation
DART buses and the Amtrak train cutting through a sliver of the state just don't cut it sometimes. What I wouldn't give for some decent public transportation...even just a single train line up and down the state. Or a DART route that made sense for my commute.
12. Dover in June
Sure the activities in Delaware are great for the economy and great for the people who enjoy huge music festivals and racing events. But for those of us just trying to get around town in June, it's a nightmare.
Again. I know. But it really is something I hate. How do people not know about this state or where it is?! It gets frustrating to keep explaining it.
