If you’re new to Delaware or don’t know much about our state, you probably haven’t realized all of the important contributions the state has made to the rest of the country. Here are a few of the reasons why you the entire country should be thankful for Delaware.
1. We were the first state!
It all started on December 7, 1787, when we became the first state. You’re welcome.
2. Monopoly was invented here.
Your favorite family board game that lasts hours… and hours… and hours… has roots in Arden, Delaware. The inventor of the game, Lizzie Magie, would play the handmade game - called the Landlord’s Game at the time – with other residents and visitors.
3. If it weren’t for Delaware, you might be hiking in a soggy jacket.
If you’ve ever enjoyed the comfort of breathable waterproof Gore-Tex apparel, you can thank W. L. Gore and Associates, who manufacture the fabric. They are headquartered in Newark.
4. We provide the ideal rest stop for migrating birds.
For those who love birding, Delaware provides the ideal place for many shorebirds to refuel during their spring and fall migrations. Birds feast on our bountiful horseshoe crab eggs before continuing on their journey to their habitats in other parts of the world.
5. Summer vacation memories are made here.
The value of Delaware’s tourism industry in 2014 was $3 billion. Imagine all of the memories made at our beaches each summer! We also have the country’s cleanest beach water.
6. Aubrey Plaza.
This Parks and Recreation actress is from Wilmington and attended Ursuline Academy.
7. Our VP is from Delaware.
Joe Biden and his wife Jill are from Wilmington.
8. We made log cabins a trend.
The first log cabins built in the United States were right here in Delaware.
9. We satisfy your popcorn cravings.
Fisher’s popcorn, with flavors like old bay dusted caramel, is shipped all around the world.
10. We keep your fridge full of the best craft brews.
Milton is home to Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, where some of the best beer in the country is made!
The next time you’re warm and dry in your Gore-Tex windbreaker or enjoying a game of Monopoly, we hope you’ll thank Delaware. What are some other products, items, and people that help put The First State on the map?
