If you’re looking to have a Connecticut adventure, I’ve got news for you! Did you know Mystic was named one of America’s 100 best adventure towns, as selected by National Geographic? Its combination of great outdoor escapes and cool maritime attractions make it a must visit destination. Check out all the cool stuff you can do here!
1. Head down to the Mystic Seaport for some American maritime history!
Home to the nation’s leading maritime museum, folks come from all over to spend time at this beautiful waterfront location.
Walk, shop, and dine beside the seaport for beautiful sea views and plenty of friendly smiles. You can even stroll through a re-created 19th-century coastal village.
It's fun to watch the boats roll in, but even more fun if you get on a boat yourself! Board historic ships to check out classic wooden beauties or go out on a boat tour for a relaxing trip around the port.
2. Visit the awesome Mystic Aquarium.
This world class center lets you explore the creatures under the sea up close and personal.
You could get a splash from this beluga whale on your visit! This place is world famous, and a favorite amongst locals.
It's probably because of all the sea creatures here! Say hello to penguins, sea lions, fur seals, and even leopard sharks.
3. The Mystic Museum of Art is a great place to see some beautiful artistic creations.
There's nothing more picture perfect than art beside the water, so you're guaranteed to love this place!
With the new renovation completed in January, you'll find a clean and modern space that makes for a great escape from the heat or rain. And there's plenty of work to be seen.
Around the property is a great walking path, known as the Centennial Brick Walkway. So this place could easily be a pitstop as you explore the town.
4. Immerse yourself in nature at the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center.
The folks here have done a great job of preserving Connecticut's natural beauty, and a visit here offers both scenic and educational exploration.
The trail here is basically a boardwalk looping through the woods, which makes it pretty easy to navigate for people of all ages. You might see a wild animal or two, but you won't have to worry about difficult terrain.
In addition to being lakeside, there's a myriad of animals to see, including turtles, owls, and even a little butterfly house.
5. Go shopping!
Olde Mistick Village is designed to look like a small town, and is full of old-fashioned shops and unique boutiques.
Historic Downtown Mystic is certainly convenient, but it also has more than 50 specialty shops. You'll love finding unique things here and supporting small family owned businesses.
The proximity to Stonington Borough means you'll never have to worry about leaving without finding something. With so many stores to shop you'll discover more than you ever bargained for.
6. Take a cruise.
I recommend working with Mystic Whaler Cruises, known for their outstanding customer service. You absolutely have to go out on the water.
Depending on your budget, the cruise can include as little or as much as you want it to, so transitioning from a family outing to a romantic date is pretty easy.
Can you believe this view? It's even better when you can feel the sea breeze on your face and actually taste the salt in the air. You definitely don't want to miss this experience!
7. Complete the course at Fields Of Fire Adventure Park.
Young and old can attempt this aerial course in the trees. You can't get any more into nature than literally walking amongst the leaves.
The course lights up beautifully at night, but you'll probably be a lot less nervous about it in the daylight. I promise that this adventure is completely safe.
Participants are strapped in and should work together to accomplish this course. So don't be nervous - just have fun!
Head on over to Mystic and start exploring!
Dine at one of the excellent seafood restaurants, rent a bike and cruise along the streets, or even go kayaking. While the adventures listed are a great place to start, you're sure to be swept up by the Mystic magic. Clear a weekend and just see where the day takes you!
