Last week, we learned that the legendary Pikes Peak Cog Railway may be closed for good after more than 100 years of operation (read our entire article here). Let’s begin with some facts about the recognizable mountain itself: While it’s thought that the great explorer Zebulon Pike discovered Pikes Peak in the early 1800s, it was actually discovered centuries prior by both Native Americans and Spanish explorers.

The Pikes Peak Summit stands at an astonishing 14,110 feet and offers what is by far one of the most incredible 360 degree views of the entire state.

It was in the mid-1800s when traveling to Pikes Peak became more popular, as the slogan for the Colorado Gold Rush was that of "Pikes Peak or Bust."
