Most of the rivers in Alaska have dangerous currents and are icy cold, not exactly the type you want to float in. But in the Interior, the Chena River runs right through the middle of Fairbanks and offers the residents a fairly safe way to enjoy the water in the legendary hot summer months. This lazy river is way more fun than a water park as you get to float through town and see the forested river banks and the friendly ducks. The Chena River runs through the middle of downtown Fairbanks. The Chena runs from the White Mountains 100-miles south to the Tanana River.
The water is cool and clear, safe for swimming or inner tubing. The Chena is a Class 2 River, which means it is fairly easy to navigate, especially in the wider, slower in-town portion.
Riverboats and jet skis zoom along the river, but are cautious of people floating, just enough so you can hang ten and ride the waves left in their wake.
The standard route is to put in at Graehl Park at
300 Front St and get out at Pioneer Park (1-2 hours) or the Boatel (2-3 Hours). Adults can take out at the Boatel for frosty beverages, live music or a game of horseshoes in the yard.
For a full day adventure, go all the way to the Pump House and get delicious food and drinks on the deck while you wait for your ride. Or stash bikes or car there to get you back downtown.
