This Epic Mountain In Alaska Will Drop Your Jaw

There are many extraordinary mountains in Alaska, but this one is exceptionally cool. Mount Redoubt, or Redoubt Volcano, is a very active stratovolcano in the Aluetian Range of Alaska. The active volcano is dangerously close to Anchorage and climbs a drastic 10,197 feet in only five miles! Such a height makes it the tallest peak in its range. Mount Redoubt is the highest summit in the Aleutian Range. In fact, several glaciers rely on this mountain seeing as it sits on rocks from the Mesozoic era.

The name, Mount Redoubt, translates from Aleutian and German, meaning "fortified place." It has also been referred to as Burnt Mountain.

Mount Redoubt has erupted four times since its first observation. The biggest eruption in 1989 caught a Boeing 747 in its plume, making it necessary for the plane to shut off its engines temporarily. Fortunately, the plane landed safely in Anchorage. The eruption in '89 was the first accurate volcanic prediction based off of long term seismic events.

The main vent is in a strange place. Instead of being located at the summit, the main vent is on the north side located near the head of Drift Glacier.

The mountain has a very steep cone and is 3.7 miles across from its most eastern to western base.
